Portraits of a New American Family

The American family has undergone profound social transformations over the past decades. One of the new families to emerge on the fabric of the American society is that headed by same-sex couples. Lesbians and gay men are choosing in increasing numbers to overcome societal barriers and fulfill their desire to become parents. ¶ Kate and Tori had their first child through insemination. As costs mounted, they decided to adopt their second child from a foster home; they expected him to be African-American, but he turned out to be part Latino. They are currently looking into adopting another child.
