The American family has undergone profound social transformations over the past decades. One of the new families to emerge on the fabric of the American society is that headed by same-sex couples. Lesbians and gay men are choosing in increasing numbers to overcome societal barriers and fulfill their desire to become parents.

Kate and Tori had their first child through insemination. As costs mounted, they decided to adopt their second child from a foster home; they expected him to be African-American, but he turned out to be part Latino. They are currently looking into adopting another child. Both Romualdo and Richard are both HIV positive. Richard started the process for becoming a father before meeting Romualdo. He first had his sperm washed from the virus using a new medical procedure, and then found an egg donor, and a surrogate mother respectively. Romualdo has two daughters from a previous marriage. Jeff and Keith adopted their first child through foster care. Three years later they were notified that their son's mother had given birth to a girl and asked if they would take care of her. They gladly accepted and are keeping in touch with the kids' mom. Brian and Juan adopted their twins, not feeling a need to have biological children of their own. The kids sometimes help with the clean-up "because it's fun." Lisa and Terri had their two kids through a closed adoption. They adapted to and embraced the requirements of raising children of a different ethnicity. Ramsey and Marney used a friend as a donor for their child; he presently lives in another city. Stephen, Scott, and their two adopted children spend almost every weekend in the solace of their house in the countryside, where they "feel [they] can be themselves." Greg and Dan chose the in-vitro process to have their child. Greg is listed as the mother on his daughter's birth certificate. Florence and Vicki had their twins through in-vitro fertilization, for which they used a known donor. It took them 5 years until Florence got pregnant. Raising the kids is now the "greatest responsibility of [their] lives."
